Mamma and Me
God and My Girlfriends #GAMGstory share submitted by: Deanna Porterfield
“Your stories are crazy, Deanna!”
I’ve heard this phrase more than once in my life. Well, all I can say is I come by crazy stories honestly. My precious mamma can make me laugh without even trying. And stories... she’s got ‘em! I can honestly say I am not bored around her, and just when I think she can’t surprise me with one more narrative, she does!
My mamma walked the college halls proudly as an almost-70-year-old woman pulling a rolling backpack behind her, with light-up wheels that appeared like shooting flames as she made a B-line to her next class. Did she care? Absolutely not! After all, “the backpack was on sale at Good Will. Who cares if the wheels look like spinning rainbows?!”
Then there’s the time she and I were going to grab some dinner at Taco Johns in Murray, Kentucky. All the poor guy behind the cash register wanted to do was take our order, but my mother wanted to tell him how her daughter “has been coming over here for music lessons since 19-and-89, and Taco Johns is her favorite place to eat!” No, that wasn’t embarrassing at all.
And there was the time she forgot to put the car in park while running late for church, only to come out and find it missing. After discovering it had rolled and bounced down a giant ravine (which then took an extraordinarily large crane to lift it out of), she was able to peep through the window and announce with glee, “Look! The tomatoes I just bought at the market stand didn’t get smashed!”
How can you NOT laugh at that, right?
She is also the one who loves praying for her family, helping a neighbor in need, cheering on grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sporting events, even if she doesn’t understand the game. Bottom line…Mamma cares.
So this “God and My Girlfriends” story is dedicated to you, Mamma. May you never worry about what others think as you do your thing, and may your love and kindness carry on through me. I think I’ll give you a call... it’s time for a good laugh!
