BFF…30 Years and Counting
For Lara: God and My Girlfriends #GAMGstory share submitted by Dee Worley
Best friend forever. The phrase is so overused, few know what it really means anymore. But, my actual BFF, Lara, makes it impossible to dilute the meaning. For the last 30 (31, actually) years, she has been my 10th grade classmate, my college roommate and the Mama to my three Godchildren. Despite our mutually exchanged one-year silent treatment (don’t all 30-year friendships have one of those?), Lara has been through, literally, everything with me.
She wrote me letters when I left to train for the Olympics. She sang Prince, Aerosmith and what we now refer to as Yacht Rock (and a million other) songs with me on road trips. She quit her job waitressing and counseled me all the way to Florida (from Alabama) when my boyfriend (now husband) broke my heart in college. She was my get-away-from-the-gym friend, roommate and confidante. She cheered for me when I won, and consoled me when I lost. She told me she was pregnant with the oops-we-didn’t-plan-this-one baby before she told her husband, found out it was a girl and said she was naming her after me, then found out it was a boy and let me name him. She’s gracefully, lovingly and with exactly the perfect words – EVERY TIME – walked me through some of the most difficult, humiliating and scary days of my life, including my Mom’s return Home to be with the Lord.
People say “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you” all the time but, when it comes to Lara, I really don’t know what I’d have done without her all these years. I’m glad I don’t have to know, and I love her more every day. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for our next 30 (40, 50, 60) years. If the first 30 years are any indication, we may actually laugh our way into eternity…while singing every song Prince ever recorded.
